We all have a story!

Therapy is a place to share this story in a confidential and safe space. From our stories, we always learn more about ourselves and others. Therapy is an opportunity to systematically review life events and experiences to see how our beliefs and choices are influenced. Therapy can help us enrich this story by teaching us more about our concerns and challenges in relation to our daily lives. Our Love for ourselves, our families, and the world is based on who we are from when we were infants to now. The more I know about my story (me), past and present, the more it helps me find ideas and strengths to bring positive change and influence to others. Therapy is a courageous act of Love!

About Donald

My career has spanned several different aspects of the caring profession. I have been a congregational Minister, as well as a Chaplain in Corrections and the Director of Spiritual Care within Tertiary Acute Care settings such as Foothills Medical Center, Calgary, Lethbridge Regional Hospital, Capital Health, Halifax Nova Scotia, and St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. I have been a practice leader and trainer of allied health staff at Fraser Health in Surrey. I attended Family Therapy Training at the Family Therapy Training Program in Calgary, Alberta. I graduated in 2006 and focused my work on couples and families. I have provided  Mental Health services as a Therapist to a rural community in Strathmore, Alberta. I have practiced Family Counseling at Family Centers and private practice agencies such as Vancouver Christian Counseling Center and Lethbridge Family Services.  I have continued to grow in my concern for families and couples by becoming a Gottman Therapist. John Gottman's work is scientifically proven effective with couples in conflict or transition due to extra-marital affairs, separation, and divorce.

Experience

During my time working in Health Care, I supported staff groups when serious incidents occurred in their Units, such as the death of a staff member or mass causality events that happened with staff, requiring additional support to prevent moral injury. I am trained in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). I have provided debriefing and defusing to healthcare workers as part of the CISM team. I have provided this service to other worksites such as banks, stores, corporate offices, and manufacturing to assist with grief, loss, and recovery as a Trauma Counsellor with Morneau Shepell (Lifeworks). During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was an essential worker who worked every day during the crisis and was directly involved in the rollout of additional services to clients and staff during the most severe parts of the pandemic.

I did additional training in 2015 to become a Supervisor with CRPO.   I have supervised CRPO candidates completing their practice hours for certification with the College of Registered Psychotherapists.

I continue to grow in self-awareness by monitoring stress, diet, and depressive cycles in my journey. To stay healthy and safe, I practice daily prayer and meditation as I assist others. I maintain physical health by attending Yoga classes and walking on the trail or the beach by the Lake. On weekends, I use my Motorcycle to get out of the city, and I often bicycle on the local trails to enjoy nature more directly.
